In an ongoing debate that seemingly will never end, many are talking about what sort of adverse health effects smoking marijuana or using cannabis vape pens over smoking cigarettes will have on the body. For decades now it has been common knowledge that cigarettes wreak havoc on the body, negatively affecting literally every organ you possess–right down to your skin. From bad metabolic health to lessened lung function and tooth decay, cigarettes do quite a number on the body. Does long term use of marijuana have the same degenerative effects?

A recent study followed over 1,000 smokers. Half of them were cigarette smokers, and the other half smoked marijuana. They were aged 18-38, combined for a total of 20 years of usage. At the end of the study, it was found that tobacco users had worse lung function and experienced more systemic inflammation. Those who smoked weed, however, did not experience these health related issues.

Long Term Effects of Cigarette Smoking on the Mouth

It is known that smoking cigarettes weakens your body’s immune system, making it harder to fight off infections. This, of course, makes it difficult to fight off gum disease, which is often caused by cigarette smoking. Smoking will also make it more difficult to heal diseased gums after the fact. Smokers run twice the risk for gum disease as opposed to non-smokers. The longer you smoke coupled with how many cigarettes you smoke increases your risk, as well. Smokers must worry about gum disease and tooth decay, but also cancers of the mouth and throat are at a higher risk of developing in those who use tobacco products.

Long Term Effects of Cannabis Smoking on the Mouth

Studies say that smoking cannabis for a long period of time is just about as damaging to your dental health as simply not flossing. For subjects who have undergone studies on dental health, researchers noticed that there was a decline in periodontal health in those who smoked cannabis from the ages of 26-38. However, that considered, there were no other health issues detected in the study as a direct result from cannabis use, such as a decrease in lung function as one would find in a tobacco smoker.

It seems perhaps the worst thing that could come of a solid 20 years of smoking marijuana may in fact just be gum disease, which does not seem to hold a candle to the slew of other issues that cigarette smoking can cause. By using marijuana vaporizers instead of smoking cannabis, perhaps one can lower their risk of gum disease even further.

The risks of smoking cannabis or using dry herb vaporizers versus smoking traditional cigarettes are remarkably low. Research suggests that the worst thing that can come from it regarding the body is gum disease, which most of those who smoke cigarettes will already be developing. So stick to your cannabis where it is legal and puff on a wax vaporizer pen (to purchase the best vaporizer, see, instead of reaching for a cigarette next time and help prevent most of those nasty health issues from cigarettes.
